The Role of Sulfur in horticulture
Sulfur as Secondary Nutrients
Sulphur (S) is an essential element in forming proteins, enzymes, vitamins, and chlorophyll in plants.
Sulfur is a so-called Secondary Nutrient.
- S activates several enzymes
- S improves crop winter hardiness
- S has an important role in photosynthesis
- S is important for plants with high oil content

An active fungicide against mildew
Growers often uses Sulfur as a preventive fungicide against powdery mildew, rose black spot, rusts, Botrytis and other diseases. Sulfur prevents fungal spores from germinating. That’s why it must be applied before the disease develops.
The Hotbox Sulfume sulphur vapouriser is one example tool to apply sulfur in your growing environment. While Sulfur as a secondary nutrient exists in only small dosage, the additional applied S is often significantly higher.
Degradation of LED Systems due to Sulphur
Numerous Factors cause LED-Systems to degradate. VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) is one main cause. Some of them also contain sulfur and are called Sulfur-containing Volative Organic Compunds) S-VOC. Furthermore, is Sulfur considered a corrosive material which can damage the electronic or LED-Chip. Almost every LED-chip manufacturer claims special caution in environments with a high amount of chemical substances and especially sulfur.

Why Seoul 3030C?
Besides the industry-leading photosynthetic photon efficacy (PPE) of 3.06 μmol/J, the Seoul 3030 Series offers the highest sulfur resistance and reliability on the market today.
This is achieved by an innovative packaging of the led chips
Lifetime and reliability tests
Also, Temperature and Humidity is considered a major factor for led degradation. The picture below shows the test-results from a comparison of different MID-Power LEDs.

Testing the Reliability for Sulfur performance
Seoul used the IEC Standard test as well as a simplified test with different environments and chemical additives to compare the 3030 series with other MID-Power LEDs on the market.
Both tests show Seoul’s higher performance than the compared chips
Not only Seoul but also hortiONE is independently testing the sulfur resistance and long-time performance.
Especially an open LED-Board without secondary optics or protective glass/plastic cover requires high reliability to keep results and light-output stable.
The above tests, as well as the technical setup of the 3030c series chips offers the best resistance and long-life guarantee on the market.
We are curious. How important is longevity for you?
Developing a lower price is quite easy when the long-term durability doesn’t matter. The LM90 value tells you how long it takes until a LED loses 10% of its light output.
Please leave your comment. Is the reliability and long-lifetime (without losing light) worth the money?
